Mountain Stream Database
The Mountain Stream Database was launched with support from the
Appalachian Stewardship Foundation.
The database currently provides access to water chemistry data obtained for 461 mountain streams in 34 western Virginia counties by the Shenandoah Watershed Study (SWAS) and the Virginia Trout Stream Sensitivity Study (VTSSS). Data and site documentation can be viewed in onscreen tables and accessed in Excel file format.
The database:
- data collected in regional sampling surveys in 1987, 2000, 2010, and 2021
- data collected on a quarterly or seasonal basis from a regionally representative set of streams from 1987 to 2023>
- graphical data display for quarterly sample streams
- sample site documentation
- county-level and individual site maps
Related information:
- descriptions of water quality measurements
- descriptions of analysis methods
- adjustments associated with instrument and method changes
SWAS-VTSSS data collection is a cooperative effort of multiple resources management agencies, conservation organizations, and volunteers (see
Cooperators).
Contact the SWAS-VTSSS
program team for additional information about the data and methods.
We encourage the use of SWAS-VTSSS data for scientific, resource management, and educational purposes. Acknowledgement for data used in publications and presentations should be given to:
